Methods in Writing Center Research

Terese Thonus, University of Baltimore

Rebecca Babcock, University of Texas of the Permian

This workshop provides an overview of methods in writing center research. Participants will discover connections between research topics/questions and possible research designs incorporating specific research methods. Rebecca and Terese will begin the workshop with a Prezi overview and accompanying handout. Participants will then break into two large groups and engage in a matching activity among research questions and study designs. Next, they take part in small-group brainstorming activities sparked by topics suggested in the MAWCA 2019 Call for Proposals, questions from everyday writing center work, or research projects already underway. After reporting out and receiving feedback from the larger group, participants will reconvene with Rebecca and Terese to discuss possible presentation and publication venues for their writing center research.

Workshop Audience: Undergraduate, Graduate, Professional Tutors, and Administrators interested in designing and implementing research in their writing centers.
