MAWCA Mini-Con 2025

Tuesday, November 18th, 3:00-4:00 PM

“Tutoring Incarcerated Writers”

Presenters: Elaine MacDougall (UMBC), Rachel Rodriguez, Emily Steinmetz, and Sheri Swayne (Washington College)

Please join us for the 2025 MAWCA Mini-Con! This one-hour, webinar-style event will feature the unique challenges and transformative potential of tutoring incarcerated writers.

The webinar features a panel of two writing center directors, an undergraduate writing tutor, and a faculty liaison, all of whom have worked directly with college-in-prison programs. Whether you’re already engaged in this community work or curious to learn how to get started, we invite you to join us for a conversation that will give real guidance on the realities of writing support for incarcerated students.

Our panelists will discuss:

● Building and sustaining academic resources for incarcerated students

● Common misconceptions and biases about incarcerated writers - and how our experiences counter them

● Tutor empathy, adaptability, and boundary-setting

● Programmatic tracking and assessment

We aim to leave substantial time for Q&A, audience discussion, and idea sharing.

Attendees will leave with insights, strategies, and resources for thinking critically about equity and access in writing center work - both within and beyond prison education contexts.

This session will be virtual and open to all writing center professionals. Please feel free to invite tutors and writing center administrative staff looking for professional development, MAWCA member or not!
