And Now Presenting: Marketing Identities for Academic Support Communities
Writing and Learning Centers have had a long history of challenges defining and explaining their services to members of the campus community. The terms “tutor” and “mentor” do not have a fixed meaning; their connotations shift depending on the speaker and the context. In that slippery space, then, how do we explain what we do to various stakeholders on campus? How do tutors market themselves to their peers, arguably one of the most important audiences to hear our message? How do we market ourselves to our institution and to the larger academic community? What kinds of materials facilitate our identity creation? In this exciting and inaugural workshop, we will have two sessions to help us think through these questions and to provide practical solutions to the problem. The first session (sponsored by Penn State Berks) will focus on the role of social media and identity construction. In the second session (sponsored by Alvernia University), attendees will consider the ways in which scripted introductions (in-person or online) can set the tone for types of interactions that others can expect from this support service.
Students can expect to leave this workshop with at least one marketing product that they can take back to their campuses. Location: McGlinn Conference Center, Alvernia University Date: November 11 Time: 10-2 Lunch will be served
We ask for a $25-50 donation from each campus to the event to help cover the cost of food. This will cover the cost of up to 12 people from each campus.
